The ocean looks deceivingly calm, flat and empty. But if you look closely, you can see the fishing line that is anchored to the broad net. It is the line that the men have to pull with all their might to bring in the net. And they have to pull in rhythm with the other team of fishermen pulling the other end of the net. Another balancing act to start out wide and then pull slowly moving toward one another without allowing the fish to escape the net.
It’s terribly hard work. I am strong and I was allowed to try to pull. Even with several guys pulling behind me and a couple in front, I could not budge the rope. Plus it’s thick and rough – no one had gloves on even though I almost got rope burn those few seconds I was trying to pull.
